Preface

Re the usage of “new” and “reprints” in these 2022 stats: New works are those that were published here in MacQueen’s Quinterly for the first time anywhere. Reprints are those which were previously published elsewhere, whether online, in print, or as spoken-word readings (such as those that appear on Rattlecasts, social media, YouTube, etc.).

Prior to 19 March 2023, MacQ considered most works that appeared online to be previously published, whether they appeared at author and artist websites, on public-access sites such as Fictionaut, and/or on social-media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, since they may have been read, viewed, and shared by hundreds or even thousands of folks.

Which also meant that, when republished in MacQ or elsewhere, they would not be eligible for nomination for certain annual anthology awards, such as Best Microfiction, The Best Small Fictions, and the Red Moon Anthologies, among others.

MacQ-5, October 2020:

1. Content: The total of 101 pieces published in Issue 5 includes 74 written works and 27 visual artworks. Of the written works, 65 are new (or 88%).

Of the 27 visual artworks, only three are previously unpublished: By the Rockets’ Red Glare; Charge of the Demon Sperm; and Pochade à Neptune (Sketch of Neptune) by MaRco Elliott.

2. Submissions: Including entries for the RESQ (aka, “the Qualmish”) Writing Challenge, we considered 930 works, representing a total of 167 submissions. We selected 101 pieces, which is ~11% of the total number of works considered.

3. VIDA Stats: MacQ-5 contains works by a total of 57 contributors, of whom 27 are women (47%) and 30 are men (53%).

Of the 57 total contributors, 26 (or ~45.5%) are “new to MacQ”—that is, their works do not appear previously in MacQueen’s Quinterly, nor in KYSO Flash, MacQ’s predecessor. Of the 26 “new” contributors, 12 are women (46.5%) and 14 are men (53.5%).

[Across 12 issues of KYSO Flash, from Fall 2014 thru Summer 2019, the number of women published therein averages 52 percent, ranging from a low of 44% in Issue 3 (Spring 2015) to a high of 59% in Issue 11 (Spring 2019). For additional KYSO Flash data, see Historical VIDA stats.]
