Bio Notes: Issue 28

VIDA Stats, MacQ-28:

* The asterisks above indicate contributors who are “new to MacQ”—that is, their works do not appear previously in MacQueen’s Quinterly (27 issues: January 2020 thru March 2025) nor in MacQ’s predecessor, KYSO Flash (12 issues: 2014 thru 2019).

Although links to 56 bios are included above, this issue contains works by a total of 59 contributors: 30 women (or 51%) and 29 men (49%).

Of the 59 contributors, 22 (or ~37%) are “new to MacQ.” Of the 22 “new” contributors, 13 are women (59%) and 9 are men (41%).

The three contributors whose bios do not appear in Issue 28 are “new to MacQ”: contemporary photographer Michael Pfundner, visual artist Horace Pippin (1888–1946), and photographer Arthur Rothstein (1915–1985).

With MacQ, as it was with KYSO Flash, I generally aim to balance the ratio of women to men authors and artists. An equal balance has occurred twice in the eleven years I’ve been publishing these journals: Issue 14 of MacQ has works by 70 contributors, 35 of whom are women; and Issue 7 of KYSO Flash has works by 32 contributors, including 16 women.

Across 28 issues of MacQ, the number of women authors and artists published therein averages ~52 percent, ranging from a low of 40% in Issues 1 and 26 (January 2020 and January 2025, respectively) to a high of 62.5% in Issue 12 (March 2022).

(Across 12 issues of KYSO Flash, from Fall 2014 thru Summer 2019, the number of women published therein averages 52 percent, ranging from a low of 44% in Issue 3 [Spring 2015] to a high of 59% in Issue 11 [Spring 2019]. For details about those issues, see Historical VIDA stats.)
