I must be two. I’m wearing my favorite ribbed shirt—red with a green tortoise sewn on—and my brown corduroys, well-worn at the knees. My chubby legs cross over each other, a doll’s topless torso diving into the gap between them. The doll’s been thrust down at such an angle as if to say I couldn’t care less about her. Arms outstretched, my hands clasp something white—the doll’s shirt.
