* Publisher’s Note:
Hans K. Schuler (1874-1951) was a German-American sculptor who created numerous public monuments, mostly for locations in Baltimore, Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area—including the Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, which was listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1980. Nearly 65,000 people are buried in this 68-acre garden cemetery, including a good number of prominent historical figures. Green Mount is notable as well for the number of sculptures and monuments by Schuler and by William Henry Rinehart (1825-1874), making it “a treasury of nineteenth century art.”
