“The dignity of movement of an ice-berg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water.”
—Ernest Hemingway, Death in the Afternoon *
What doesn’t make it into the story may yet, much as this world still arrives in sleep. Beneath the water’s flaking mirror, icebergs and rock. Sandbars under shoaling depths, like dim whales known to eye a person’s curious form. Lit there by circling light, but indistinct, in brown tincture of kelp. Old photographs gone gauzy, as viewed through cataracts. And then I wake to light a candle and sink into a book. More of something bright to steer by.
