Her Voice

When she woke from her long
sleep in a land haunted by death,

she asked, Am I still Brianna?
her voice hollow, lost in the blanket,
muffling her name, dragging the r,

stretching the a, murmuring
as though she were saying it

for the first time. She stared at her
hands, studying the map of lines
that brought her back to us

from a pale horizon of heartbeats,
and breathing, chilled by an icy sea.
