Dream of Billy Casper

—After Ken Loach

In the mists of this verdant forest
you wait, in a size-too-small parka,
hand outstretched in leather glove,
face still pale and grimed.

Unflinching, your pale blue eyes meet mine.
As you raise your arm high
we listen for the silent beat
of wings, the dizzy vertical stoop from the air.

From the distance, a golden macaw
screeches in surround sound,
the sweet scent of pine in its nares.
