It’s Not So Much That You’re Thirsty

You use that old Boy Scout trick of putting a pebble in your mouth to feel less thirsty, just to see if it works. You’ve never done that before, just as you’ve never done much of what you did this week out in the backcountry alone and unafraid, walking the cliffs of the High Sierra. Today, you haven’t spoken a word to anyone. Last night, you watched satellites passing above you. Tonight, you hope to sleep up on the ridge overlooking the everything of the Mojave. As you stare out toward Nevada, you know you’ve gotten water from a stone.
