Poem, WaltMarie: 53 words
By Claire Koehler

Will

The newbie wrestler breathes in, clamps hard his thin arm muscle, holds
steady
strains against the hairy muscle, bulging from Bruno’s arm.
Pressure—
the need to—be—called anything—but—“Wimp”
heightens
concentration on not—giving—in—holding firm—to his
desire.
Heart races—fiercely as the fleshy lever starts
to move.

Publisher’s Notes:

1. “Will” is one of two WaltMarie poems that appear here in Issue 18 of MacQ. See also “Origami Dogs Now Available” by Jonathan Yungkans.

2. The WaltMarie was invented by Candace Kubinec, a Pennsylvania-based poet and member of the Poetic Asides community. In February 2021, poet and Senior Editor of Writer’s Digest Robert Lee Brewer wrote, for Poetic Form Fridays:

“I’m introducing Candace Kubinec’s form, the Waltmarie (which is itself a nod to PA members and Poetic Bloomings hosts, Marie Elena Good and Walter J. Wojtanik).”
