Publisher’s Notes:

1. Remission... was posted to Stout’s Facebook page on 19 August 2013 with this note: “I don’t know what the fuck it is exactly, but it involves honest: Water+Color+Paper”

2. ...Nowhere also appears in “The Defiled Artwork of Brett Stout” in Dream Noir (30 November 2019). I had found a slightly different version at Stout’s Facebook page (posted 10 October 2018), which lists the media as: “bleach/sandpaper/spit/watercolors”

3. The artist posted this untitled abstract to his Facebook page on 17 January 2010.

When I asked permission a few months ago to publish several of Stout’s artworks, including this abstract painting which I like very much, he at first politely demurred, replying that half of those I had chosen were never meant for publication. He had created them in the middle of the night, threw ’em on Facebook, and then forgot about ’em. But from my point of view, the “shit we make in the middle of the night” sometimes turns out to be knock-your-socks-off fantastic. Case in point, the two abstracts above.

Not to mention his trio of bloodletting artworks—one of which also appears here in MacQ-1: 18 Gauge de Stijl. Thanks again, Brett!

And by the way, we consider works posted to Facebook as already published, because they are often viewed and shared by numerous folks, even thousands of people.

Brett Stout
Issue 1, January 2020

is a 40-year-old artist and writer—and a high-school dropout and former construction worker turned college graduate and paramedic. He creates mostly controversial art, usually while breathing toxic paint fumes from a small, cramped apartment known as “The Nerd Lab” in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He is the author of an insanity-filled novel, Lab Rat Manifesto. His artworks and poems have appeared in a range of diverse media, from international indie zines like Litro Magazine in the UK, to university publications.
